SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team got a career-high 28 points Saturday from sophomore guard
Lauren Gold and 23 points from junior post player
Stephanie Knauer but could not stave off a hard-charging Shepherd squad, dropping a 94-82 decision to the Rams at the Butcher Center.
Shippensburg (5-4) trailed by seven points, 37-30, with 4:16 to play in the first half, but could not get within six points the rest of the way. Gold's career-high effort included another personal best of four three-pointers (on six attempts) and a 10-of-11 effort at the free-throw line – with all of her attempts coming in the second half. She also had five assists and three steals to just two turnovers.
Gold's streak of consecutive made free throws ended at 22, but the sophomore guard has made 35 of her last 37 attempts over the course of four games.
Knauer led all players at the intermission with 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting; the production marked the most points she has ever scored the first half of a game. She finished with 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting with eight rebounds.
Sophomore
Logan Snyder chipped in with 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting, her third straight game in double figures, before fouling out with about four minutes to play.
Fellow sophomore
Colleen Young had eight points, five assists and four rebounds. Sophomore
Morgan Griffith had eight points and eight rebounds.
Shepherd (7-2), who entered Saturday averaging just four three-pointers (and 11 attempts) per game, shot 8-of-10 from distance in the first half, made 10 in the game and led by as many as 17 points in the second half. The Rams also shot 90 percent from the free-throw line, making 18-of-20 attempts, and shot 53 percent from the floor in the contest. Cara Mason had 27 points and 10 assists to pace the Rams.
Shippensburg hits the road early next week for back-to-back PSAC crossovers against Western Division opponents. SU is at California on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. matchup with the Vulcans before facing Slippery Rock at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
