No. 3 Field Hockey Drops NCAA Quarterfinal at No. 2 Millersville, 2-1 in Double Overtime

SU finishes campaign tied for the fewest goals allowed (13) in a single season

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The No. 3 Shippensburg University field hockey team fell Tuesday, 2-1 in double overtime, at No. 2 Millersville in a 2014 NCAA Division II Field Hockey Quarterfinals from Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.

Shippensburg (15-5) trailed just two minutes into the game as Millersville (18-3) was able to get on the board with a quick passing play inside the arc.

At the 24:45 mark in the second half, Shippensburg scored after a furious sequence of shots following a penalty corner. Sophomore Suzanne Muller received the entry pass and weaved past a defender before she fired a shot on goal that careened to senior Lucy Kauffman. Her shot was blocked before bouncing to sophomore Kendall Beck who promptly drilled the ball into back right side of the cage for the equalizer.

As time was winding down in the second half, Millersville had several opportunities to take the lead, including four shots in the final minute.

Sophomore Taylor Fisher recorded a key defensive save with 18 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.

In the second overtime, Millersville scored after Champayne Hess grabbed a loose ball from near midfield and dribbled all the way down to the scoring circle, where she scored after getting the rebound off an initial shot.

The Marauders led in shots 19-9, 10-4 in shots on goal, and in penalty corners, 15-6.

Despite the loss, SU reached the NCAA Tournament for the seventh consecutive year and the 10th time in 11 seasons under NFHCA Hall of Fame head coach Bertie Landes.

Freshman goalkeeper Ally Mooney was valiant once again, making seven saves.

"We had such great practices over the past week and a half, and the kids were very motivated to play well," Landes said. "Although we started a little slow, I thought we played much better in the second half and our passing was amazing. We had some chances but [Millersville] is a very experienced team."

Shippensburg finishes the season with 13 goals allowed – tied for the fewest allowed in a single season in school history. The Raiders did not allow more than two goals in any game this season.

Tuesday's meeting with Millersville was the fourth matchup of the year between the two teams. The Marauders were victorious in the PSAC Semifinals, 2-0 at West Chester, while the teams split the regular-season series by winning on the other's home turf. The win by Millersville also snaps a streak of eight alternating wins and losses in the series.

This was the 10th meeting between the schools in the last three years, with seven of the games decided by one goal and the other three meetings decided by two goals.

SU has now played in four overtime NCAA Tournament games in school history, including the National Championship game last season (W, 2-1, vs. LIU Post), the 2008 quarterfinals (W, 2-1, at IUP) and 2008 semifinals (L, 2-3, at Bloomsburg).
