BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team recovered from an early 18-point deficit Saturday to tie its conference opener at halftime, but the Raiders were ultimately outlasted by No. 16 Bloomsburg, 64-57, from Nelson Field House.
Shippensburg (1-2, 0-1 PSAC East) jumped out to a 7-2 lead at the 17:15 mark in the first half before allowing 18 straight points to Bloomsburg in a span of five minutes. However, the Raiders immediately responded with a 7-0 run of their own, and were able to fight back to eventually tie the game at 27-27 before half.
The second half was tightly contested as Shippensburg trailed by five points or less for the majority of the period. Bloomsburg (2-1, 2-0) was able to pull away on the legs of a 14-of-17 (82.4 percent) performance at the free-throw line during the second half.
Sophomore
Lauren Gold scored a season-high 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting and handed out four assists while sophomore
Colleen Young contributed nine points and five rebounds.
The Raiders limited Bloomsburg to 21-of-62 (33.9 percent) shooting from the field, and to 13 points below its season average of 77 points per game.
Junior
Stephanie Knauer recorded 12 points and seven rebounds while sophomore
Morgan Griffith recorded 11 rebounds.
SU will travel to Bowie State on Tuesday at 5 p.m. to take on the Bulldogs in a nonconference tilt from the A.C. Jordan Arena. The Raiders defeated Bowie State, 79-55, last weekend to cap off the Wolf's Bus Lines Classic.
