SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — The Shippensburg University football team hosts Cheyney on Saturday for Homecoming with a noon matchup from SU Student Association Field at Seth Grove Stadium.
For those that cannot attend, a variety of live coverage options are available, including a free online webstream courtesy of Shippensburg University Television (SUTV). Links are posted above.
The game is also expected to be carried by the local Comcast community access channel (21). Series History:• Shippensburg holds a 15-0 lead in the all-time series with Cheyney. Since moving into the PSAC Eastern Division in 2008, SU has won all six meetings by a combined 305-46 margin.
• Until 2011, the Red Raiders had not allowed more than 13 points to Cheyney in history. The most lopsided margin of victory was a 68-0 victory in 1954 under legendary SU coach Vinton Rambo. SU has shut out the Wolves four times – including twice in the last four years.
• SU is 8-0 against Cheyney at home, last winning 61-9 in 2012.
About the Teams:• The Red Raiders, picked No. 4 in the PSAC Eastern Division Preseason Coaches' Poll, went 7-4 last season but are just 3-4 this season. SU is looking to replicate its 2011 season, Maciejewski's first at SU, in which the team won its last four games to finish with a 7-4 record.
• The Wolves, picked last in the PSAC Eastern Division Preseason Coaches' Poll, have lost 28 straight games dating back to the 2012 season opener. Its closest game of the year was a 12-point loss to Lincoln in the season opener.
Last Week:• Shippensburg took to the ground, running for its most yards in a game since November 2011, but could not stave off a powerful attack from No. 10 West Chester, falling 55-28 on an overcast and breezy afternoon from Farrell Stadium. SU ran the ball 57 times for 322 yards – marking the most rushes and rushing yards for the Red Raiders in their last 32 games (60 rushes, 401 yards vs. ESU on Nov. 5, 2011).
• Cheyney was credited with four interceptions, two by Jamil Williams and two by Gary Brown, but could not find the end zone as the Wolves fell 28-0 in their Homecoming game against Lock Haven. The Cheyney offense amassed just 79 yards of offense. The Wolves were led by signal caller Michael Campbell, who rushed for 20 yards and was 6-of-16 in the air for 53 yards.
Notes:• Last Saturday, senior running back
Blair Brooks toted the ball 18 times for a career-high 171 yards, averaging 9.5 yards per carry, in addition to his fourth two-touchdown game of the year. He is now sixth all-time in career rushing yards at Shippensburg (2,176) and eighth in all-purpose yards (3,695).
• Junior halfback
Andrew Smith had 11 carries for 78 yards and a touchdown last week; he was not stopped once for negative yardage, and averaged 7.1 yards per rush. Smith added 141 kickoff return yards to his total despite the Golden Rams squibbing their kickoffs in the second half. His 219 all-purpose yards mark his SU career high.
• Sophomore
Justin Pyle finished with a career-high 67 yards on 17 carries last week; he entered the West Chester game with 21 rushes and 82 yards for the season.
• For the second straight game, SU did not commit a turnover. The Red Raiders entered last week's game at Lock Haven having won the turnover margin just once in 14 games but have now done so in back-to-back contests.
• Shippensburg's 200 first downs through seven games are the second-most in Division II, trailing only Colorado School of Mines. As a team, SU is fifth in the country in kickoff return average (25.97), while Smith individually ranks second-best in Division II with 727 kickoff return yards.
•
Trevor Harman, who still needs a touchdown to become the sole PSAC record holder for career receiving touchdowns, ranks second in the country in averaging 10.0 receptions per game.
• SU remains eighth in total offense (second in the PSAC), averaging 525 yards per game, and 17th in passing offense (305.3).
