SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Facing its first overtime test of the season, the Shippensburg University women's basketball team was led by five starters in double figures that held off multiple second-half and overtime surges by Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon inside Heiges Field House to capture a 74-73 triumph that gave head coach
Kristy Trn '03/'04M her 250th career win.
"It just means that I've had a lot of wonderful student-athletes that I was fortunate enough to coach over the last 15 seasons and I attribute any success I have to them," said Trn. "They've done an outstanding job and treated me very well."
Led by freshman
Lauren Gold with a game-high 11 made free throws, Shippensburg (9-3) recorded a season single-game best free-throw efficiency of 86.7 percent (26-of-30).
The Raiders had a chance to take control of the contest with a 9-0 run that started at the 6:31 mark in the second half to put SU up five with 3:56 remaining in the half. Slippery Rock (2-11) rallied back, as they had done twice previously in the second half, to tie the score up 63-63 after Megan Hardiman was fouled while attempting a three-pointer and knocked down all three foul shots with 5.2 seconds remaining in regulation.
Gold, who finished with a team-high 17 points, started the overtime period scoring with a three-pointer, but Shippensburg was unable to build a substantial lead and pull away from the Rock. With 10 seconds remaining in overtime, Gold was at the foul line and knocked down her final two free throws to give her a team-high 17 points and put SU up 74-70. The freebies proved to make the difference as The Rock's D'Asia Chambers hit a three-pointer on the following possession as time expired.
"
Lauren Gold comes down and hits the opening three [in overtime] and they usually say the team that scores first ends up winning so I thought that right there showed how they responded [to the game-tying SRU free throws at the end of regulation]," Trn said.
The last time SU had all five starters reach double figures was Feb. 24, 2010, in an 85-80 home loss to West Chester.
Sophomore
Stephanie Knauer finished with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting and seven boards while freshman
Morgan Griffith totaled 11 points and hauled in a game-high 15 boards (one shy of matching her career high) en route to her fourth double-double of the season.
Senior
Sarah Strybuc recorded 12 points while going a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe in addition to a team-high four assists. Sophomore
Caitlyn Deeter finished with 10 points.
The Raiders will return to action when they hit the road on Wednesday in a 5:30 p.m. contest at Edinboro.
