Ramos Goes 5-0 as Wrestling Finishes 2-4 at Super Region Two Duals

Freshman Evan Ramos led SU with 5-0 record on the day; Calambas posts 4-1 mark, Barnes records 3-1 mark

The Shippensburg University wrestling team finished a grueling Saturday with a 2-4 dual-meet record at the Super Region Two Duals hosted by Newberry College. SU won its first two matches over Limestone and Anderson (S.C.) before losing its final four duals, including a loss to No. 2-ranked Newberry.

Shippensburg (8-10) had seven wrestlers claim multiple victories on the day, highlighted by freshman Evan Ramos, who went 5-0 between 184 and 197 pounds with a pin, two technical falls and a major decision. The fourth-ranked wrestler in the region at 184, Ramos has now won seven consecutive matches and improves his season record to 21-6.

Other Raiders who claimed multiple victories include junior Dave Calambas, who went 4-1 with a pin and a major decision at 125 pounds and freshman Kyle Barnes, who went 3-1 with a pin at 149 pounds.

Senior Jacob Nale (a pin and a major decision), freshman Chris Miller (a pin and a technical fall), sophomore Mark Lentz and freshman Brett Pastore all finished with two wins on the day.

Shippensburg returns to PSAC competition next weekend when it travels to Erie for dual meets vs. Gannon (Friday, 7 p.m.) and Mercyhurst (Saturday, 1 p.m.).

Shippensburg 22, Limestone (S.C.) 13

SU began the day with a 22-13 victory over Limestone after claiming victories in three of the first four bouts, including an 11-3 major decision by Calambas at 125 pounds.

Ramos earned a 12-3 major decision at 184 pounds and Nale cemented the victory with a pin at 1:39 in the final heavyweight bout.

Freshman Dante Steffenino picked up a 9-7 decision at 133 pounds, Barnes claimed a 4-0 decision at 149 pounds and Lentz earned a 3-1 decision at 165 pounds.

The Raiders continued their winning ways with a 39-12 triumph over Anderson (S.C.). SU received pins from Calambas in 4:35 and junior Casey Hedash in 2:42 at 197 pounds.

Miller had a key victory after he earned a 15-0 technical fall at 133 pounds to put SU up 11-0 after just two bouts.

Shippensburg jumped out to an early 12-0 lead after the first two bouts, receiving a forfeit victory at 125 pounds and Miller earning a fall in 5:17 at 133 pounds.

The Raiders went on to lose the next five straight bouts, but only trailed by six points.

Ramos broke the skid with a 21-4 technical at 184 pounds to pull the Raiders within one point of King. SU surrendered the final two bouts, however, and suffered its first loss of the day.

Freshman Karl Lightner earned a 14-4 major decision at 141 pounds to give SU its first points of the match. Barnes followed up Lightner's win with a pin in 1:30 at 149 pounds that put the Raiders ahead, 10-9.

After falling behind through the middleweight bouts, SU earned victories in the final two bouts with an injury forfeit and a 9-1 major decision by Nale at 285 pounds.

The Raiders surrendered 18 points by forfeiting three bouts against No. 2-ranked Newberry after dealing with fatigue from wrestling four consecutive dual matches prior to the match against the Wolves.

The only victory SU claimed in the match was courtesy of Ramos, who earned a fall in 3:42 at 184 pounds.

Shippensburg had an opportunity to come out of the day with a .500 record, but the Raiders suffered a disappointing one-point loss to Coker after losing in the first overtime period of the final bout.

SU received decisions from Calambas at 125 pounds, Barnes at 149 pounds, Lentz at 157 pounds and Pastore at 165 pounds.

Ramos capped off an outstanding day with an 18-2 technical fall at 184 pounds.
