SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – A dominating first-half performance propelled the Shippensburg University women's basketball team to an 86-57 PSAC Eastern Division victory on Wednesday evening over Kutztown at Heiges Field House.
The Raiders (11-6, 5-2 PSAC East) shot a stellar 75 percent (6-of-8) in the first half from behind the arc on their way to snapping a three-game home losing streak to the Golden Bears that was started back on Feb. 20, 2010.
Kutztown (6-11, 3-4) struggled to find consistent offensive production, shooting just 25.9 percent from the field in the first half and just 35 percent for the game. SU produced a 51.6 field-goal percentage in the first half and carried a 24-point lead into halftime.
Shippensburg never trailed as a three-pointer by senior
Sarah Strybuc just over six minutes into the game gave SU a 9-6 lead and put the Raiders in front for the remainder of the contest.
Strybuc contributed to the offensive effort with 19 points and sophomore
Stephanie Knauer hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds in addition to scoring six points.
Shippensburg had four freshmen set or tie single-game career high totals. Headlining the group was the game's leading scorer freshman
Lauren Gold who set a career high with 24 points. Gold tied a career-high with three three-pointers on five attempts and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line.
Freshman
Logan Snyder set career highs in points (17), rebounds (seven), and three-pointers (two). Freshman
Haley Scullion tied her career high with six points and set a new career high with a game-high five assists.
Rounding out the group of freshmen with career-high performances was
Colleen Young who finished with a career-high three assists in addition to recording two points and three rebounds.
Shippensburg will return to action on Saturday when the team travels to Millersville for a 1 p.m. contest.
