Raider Basketball Rings in New Year, Hosts Cal, Rock in Weekend PSAC Crossover Doubleheaders

Women play first game since 12-day layoff over holiday break; Men look to bounce back from New Year's Eve loss at Wilmington (Del.)

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — The Shippensburg University women's and men's basketball teams will make their 2014 debuts this weekend when they return to Heiges Field House for a pair of PSAC crossover doubleheaders against California (Pa.) on Friday and Slippery Rock on Saturday.

The women's games will tip at 1 p.m. each day while the men's games will tip afterward at approximately 3 p.m. The games will not count toward the PSAC standings.

The Raiders will return to action on Wed., Jan. 8, when they travel to Edinboro (5:30 and 7:30 p.m.) for each team's PSAC crossover finale.

WOMEN

• Shippensburg ended the 2013 portion of its schedule on Sat., Dec. 21, when it held off a second-half charge by visiting Seton Hill for an 82-71 home victory. The Raiders shot 49.2 percent from the field while four starters scored in double figures, led by senior Sarah Strybuc's 20 points and season-high seven assists. Freshman Morgan Griffith recorded her third double-double of the season with 14 points (tied for her career high) and 11 rebounds.

• Strybuc was named the PSAC East Player of the Week on Dec. 23 for the first time in her career after averaging 22.7 points per game and leading SU in scoring in all three games of a 3-0 week for the Raiders.

• The Vulcans last earned a 63-53 win at Millersville on Dec. 21, while The Rock recorded a 77-66 triumph at Cheyney on the same day.

MEN

• Shippensburg ended its nine-day holiday break from competition on Tuesday afternoon when it could not overcome a double-digit halftime deficit in a 77-67 road loss at Wilmington (Del.) on New Year's Eve.

• SU got 25 points from sophomore Joe Lococo, who led all scorers in Tuesday's game. Lococo was 9-of-18 from the field, including 3-of-6 from three-point range, and also led the Raiders with seven rebounds and three assists. It is the fifth time this season he has scored at least 25 points in a game.

• The Vulcans last dropped a 78-66 decision at Millersville on Sat., Dec. 21, while The Rock earned a 94-70 win at Cheyney on the same day.
