EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – After an impressive start that gave the Shippensburg University men's basketball team a six-point lead over the No. 10 team in the country with under seven minutes left in the first half, the Raiders could not hold off a fast-scoring East Stroudsburg squad in a 101-71 loss to the undefeated Warriors from Koehler Fieldhouse.
Sophomore
Jay Hardy paced the Raiders (2-12, 0-4 PSAC East) with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including 3-of-6 from three-point range. He also pulled down a career-high eight rebounds.
Hardy scored a career-high 11 first-half points, but scored his final points just three minutes into the second half as the Warriors (15-0, 5-0) held him to just two shot attempts for the remainder of the contest.
Junior
Sam Pygatt scored a season-high 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting in addition to four rebounds.
Sophomore
Joe Lococo also hit double figures with 12 points while freshman
Abe Massaley and sophomore
Tony Ellis each recorded nine points and six rebounds.
The win gave East Stroudsburg a single-season school-record 15-game winning streak, and unlike last year, when the Raiders snapped ESU's 14-game winning streak in an 87-77 home win on Feb. 16, the Raiders were unable to prevent ESU from entering the Warrior record book.
SU led by as many as six on three occasions in the first half, including a 27-21 lead with seven minutes remaining, before ESU embarked on a dominating 22-5 run over a five-minute span and entered the break with a 10-point lead. The Warriors then opened the second half on an 11-0 run and never looked back, stretching its lead to as many as 33 points.
Shippensburg returns home on Wednesday with an 8 p.m. contest against West Chester from Heiges Field House.
