SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 2 Shippensburg University field hockey team received goals from five different players on Sunday afternoon to defeat the visiting Owls of Southern Connecticut State, 5-1, in the final game of the 2013 Jane Goss Memorial Tournament.
Shippensburg (2-0) established early momentum with two goals in the first 2:43 of play. Just one minute in, senior Lauren Taylor (Narvon/Garden Spot) tapped in the rebound of a shot by senior Bre White to put the Raiders up 1-0.
Less than two minutes later, senior Megan Jett smacked in a shot from deep inside the arc to extend the lead to 2-0. Jett scored in both games this weekend.
In the second half, SU got goals from White, senior Taylor Bender and sophomore Molly Stuart. Junior Lucy Kauffman assisted on the goals by White and Bender, while Stuart's shot was sent from outside the arc but deflected off a defender's stick and into the goal.
White finished the weekend with four goals in two games, bringing her career total to 56. She is now tied with Lindsey Knupp '05 for fifth in school history and just one behind Natalie Grazan '07 for fourth on SU's all-time list.Â
SU out-shot Southern Connecticut State (0-2) by a 33-4 margin and fired 24 of its shots on goal. The Raiders held the Owls without a shot for the first 49 minutes of play, but SCSU did manage a goal off a penalty corner by Kristi Montemurro at 49:26.
In goal, sophomore Taylor Webster made two saves in relief of senior starter Carenna Neely. Both goaltenders played one half. Audrey Dolloff made 19 saves for the Owls.
On Tuesday, No. 2 Shippensburg will host No. 1 West Chester at 4 p.m. from Robb Sports Complex. The game does not count in the PSAC standings.
