SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Bre White tallied a first-half hat trick and two assists on Saturday afternoon as the No. 2 Shippensburg University field hockey team opened the 2013 season with a 7-1 victory over Saint Michael's in the opening game of the Jane Goss Memorial Tournament from Robb Sports Complex.
The Raiders (1-0) out-shot the Purple Knights (0-1) by a 42-9 margin and began the game quickly, scoring twice in the first nine minutes. Senior
Megan Jett – who made her first career start in her 21st game at SU – scored the season's first goal off a White helper.
After finding the back of the cage for her first goal of the afternoon, White assisted junior
Ari Saytar nearly 20 minutes into the contest to give the Raiders a 3-0 lead. White finished with a game-high 10 shots and completed her hat trick in a seven-minute span later in the half, with the first coming on a one-on-one situation with the SMC goalkeeper and the second off an assist from sophomore
Molly Stuart.
Senior goalkeeper
Carenna Neely started and played the entire first half, finishing with three saves. Sophomore
Taylor Webster took over for the second half and finished with two saves. The lone goal she gave up was on a penalty stroke midway through the period.
Freshmen
Charlotte Cornell was a force in front of the cage throughout the second half and scored both of SU's second-half tallies unassisted in a span of just over two minutes.
Junior
Kim Wallace made her first career start, while freshmen
Taylor Fisher and
Katelyn Grazan also earned starts in their collegiate debuts. All 25 players on the SU roster earned playing time in the win.
The final day of the Jane Goss Memorial Tournament will be held Sunday, with Saint Michael's and Mansfield – 5-2 winners over Southern Connecticut State in Saturday's second game – kicking things off at 10 a.m. Shippensburg will then play SCSU at approximately 12:30 p.m.
