SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – A game-winning goal from senior
Megan Jett with 8:38 left in the second overtime on Saturday afternoon gave the No. 1 Shippensburg University field hockey team a 1-0 sudden-death victory over long-time rival and No. 8-ranked Bloomsburg from Robb Sports Complex.
The overtime contest was SU's (9-0, 2-0 PSAC) first since a victory over East Stroudsburg on October 23, 2010, and the first to extend into double-overtime since a win at IUP during the 2008 season (Nov. 8).
"We had some opportunities and didn't capitalize, but our kids hung in there," SU head coach
Bertie Landes said. "The overtime was just about keeping possession and not panicking and we did that."
The Raiders and Huskies (4-4, 0-1) added another installment to their competitive rivalry with a defensive battle that included six cards and left few scoring opportunities for either team. The teams combined for just one shot in the first 20 minutes of play, and the first penalty corner of the game didn't occur until there were under two minutes remaining in the first half.
After totaling just three shots and no corners in the first half, SU managed six corners in the second half and held a 20-2 advantage in shots after halftime.
Jett's strike came nearly midway through the final overtime period when she sent in a corner that found senior
Bre White, who made a move and sent in a pass to the left post where an open Jett awaited to tap in her third game-winner of the season and seventh goal overall.
"We knew the post was open and we just had to get a good hit out," Landes said. "I knew Bre could dodge the first player and then Meg was wide open and Bre just gave a beautiful pass. It was gorgeous and Meg just had to tap it in."
White had a game-high five shots while Jett and junior
Lucy Kauffman each had four. Senior goalkeeper
Carenna Neely made a pair of saves en route to her second shutout of the season with Saturday's made even more impressive by her 92 minutes in the cage.
The win gives the Raiders a two-game winning streak over Bloomsburg, as the Huskies now hold a 5-4 lead in the head-to-head series over the last five seasons.
SU will travel to IUP next Saturday for a 7 p.m. clash with the Crimson Hawks.
