The Shippensburg University women's soccer team tied the game in the 83rd minute on Friday afternoon before winning in the third minute of overtime on a golden goal from senior Ashley Vellucci for a 3-2 comeback victory at Mercyhurst.
The Raiders (5-2, 4-2 PSAC) played tied or from behind for the majority of the match yet held a 25-12 advantage in shots and a 9-1 advantage in corners en route to their first road win at Mercyhurst (3-3-1, 2-3-1) in program history.
"To travel all the way here, be down twice, and rally from both deficits, that shows a lot of heart," head coach Rob Fulton said after the game. "They never gave up today – they were resilient, they competed hard and found a way."
SU first tied the game at 1-1 four minutes before halftime with a header from senior Meghan Mahon (first goal of the season) off a corner kick from junior Brooke Clippinger. The Lakers regained the lead in the 57th minute with a successful penalty kick.
Senior Kylee Bricker netted the crucial equalizer at 2-2 in the 83rd minute, however, for her first career goal in her 48th career game (and 37th start). Just about two minutes later, the Raiders gained a one-man advantage for the remainder of the match when Mercyhurst was issued a red card for fighting.
Shippensburg took advantage in the beginning of overtime, getting off a pair of shots in the first two minutes before Vellucci netted her first goal of 2013 with the game-winner at the 92:41 mark off an assist from junior Kate Zech.
Zech had a game-high five shots (with four on goal) while Mahon and Clippinger each took four shots. Senior goalkeeper Shelbie Rackley made five saves.
The victory gives the Raiders 12 conference points on the season – after totaling just 14 all of last season – to put them in a tie for third with four other teams thus far in the PSAC standings. SU's four PSAC wins this season matches its total from all of 2012.
"It's extremely hard to go on the road in this conference and get wins," Fulton said. "To come out with three points today is huge."
Shippensburg will remain in Erie to face Gannon at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
