SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University field hockey team continued to pack a potent scoring punch Friday, firing 37 shots on goal en route to opening its PSAC schedule with a convincing 5-1 victory over Mansfield on a pleasant fall afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (8-0, 1-0 PSAC) extended its season-opening streak of scoring four or more goals in a game to eight, matching a run set during the 2005 season. The Raiders finished the 2005 campaign with a school-record 108 goals. SU unleashed constant pressure on the Mountaineers Friday, posting a lopsided 54-16 margin in shots.
"We just emphasized going wide and getting our shot off and being aggressive in the circle," head coach Bertie Landes said after the game. "It's hard to play attack within three yards because we had so many repetitive shots; there were so many players back there."
Senior Taylor Bender scored once in each half. Senior Megan Jett opened the scoring less than two minutes in and assisted on Bender's first goal. Senior Lauren Taylor and freshman Kendall Beck also tallied for the Raiders.
Mansfield (3-4, 0-1) goalkeeper Kristie Rollman was forced to make 27 saves and her back line accrued five defensive saves. MU's goal came late in the first half from Taryn Schawillie, her ninth of the season.
For Shippensburg, Jett and Taylor now have six goals on the season. Bender's two goals give her five for the year. Senior Katie Shoop was credited with two assists and freshman Taylor Fisher notched her team-leading third defensive save of the season.
Senior Carenna Neely made eight saves in the first half and was relieved at the intermission by sophomore Taylor Webster. Neely has all eight goaltending victories for SU this season and improved her career record to 17-0 in 41 career games (16 starts).
"We're really staying focused on each game at a time and what we can do to make ourselves better," Landes said. "They're responding to practice and to coaching and I'm excited about tomorrow."
Shippensburg will host No. 8 Bloomsburg at 3 p.m. Saturday at Robb Sports Complex. The Huskies had Friday off.
