Behind a pair of goals from senior
Lauren Taylor on Tuesday afternoon, the undefeated and No. 1-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team defeated No. 7 Mercyhurst, 5-1, from the Lakers' Tullio Field.
With the victory, SU (7-0, 0-0 PSAC) has now scored at least four goals in each of its first seven games of the season. The last time the Raiders accomplished such a feat to start the season was in 2005, when the team scored at least four goals in each of its first eight games.
Taylor opened the scoring 15 minutes into the game with a redirect off a pass from junior
Ari Saytar, who would later in the game add her own goal unassisted.
Senior
Megan Jett scored SU's second goal of the first half eight minutes later off an assist from senior
Bre White.
Eight minutes into the second half, freshman
Suzanne Muller converted her second penalty stroke of the season before Taylor added her second goal of the day unassisted less than two minutes later.
Senior starting goalkeeper
Carenna Neely exited after Muller's penalty stroke as sophomore
Taylor Webster played the remaining 26 minutes in relief.
Blair Pembleton's lone goal for Mercyhurst (3-3) under a minute into the second half is the first Laker goal the Raiders have given up in the last five matchups between the two teams, as SU had shutout Mercyhurst twice last season and twice in 2011.
Tuesday's contest was SU's final non-conference matchup of the season as the Raiders return home to Robb Sports Complex this weekend for two PSAC contests. They will play Mansfield at 4 p.m. Friday before a 3 p.m. Saturday game against rival Bloomsburg.
