SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team capitalized on a first-half goal by freshman
Casey Rightmyer to achieve a 1-0 victory over IUP Wednesday afternoon from David See Field.
The Raiders (4-1, 3-1 PSAC) notched the only tally of the match in the 35th minute after Rightmyer finished her shot high and to the left corner of the goal. The play was set up by junior
Kate Zech, who was credited with the assist after sending a lead pass to Rightmyer at the top of the box.
The goal by Rightmyer is her second of the season. She now has two goals in as many games, both of which are game-winners. She now leads the team in goals (two) and points (four).
Zech's assist is the first of the season for SU. She now has three points on the season, good for second on the team.
Shippensburg played a solid possession game Wednesday, using crisp passes and a staunch defense to stifle IUP's offense.
"We focused on keeping the ball, possessing the ball, and connecting passes," head coach
Rob Fulton said. "We made them chase a little bit in the first half, which opened up the game for us and made it difficult for them."
The Crimson Hawks (4-2, 3-2) did manage to out-shoot the Raiders 8-2. SU held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior
Shelbie Rackley totaled five saves in the contest and improved her record to 4-1. Rackley also picked up her fourth shut-out of the season, which leads the conference.
Today's win now extends the Raiders' unbeaten streak against the Crimson Hawks to four games.
"It certainly is a good win to hopefully propel us to the top of the conference," Fulton said.
The women's soccer team returns to action on Saturday as they travel to Clarion to face the Eagles in a noon contest.
