SU enters 2013 as the preseason favorite in the PSAC Eastern Division for the first time in history after an 11-2 season in which it reached the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs. East Stroudsburg, meanwhile, was voted to finish fifth in the PSAC Eastern Division Preseason Coaches Poll. ESU finished last season 5-5 with a 4-3 East record and finished tied for third in the division.
Shippensburg returns 29 letter-winners, including eight starters on defense, six on offense and its two specialists. East Stroudsburg returns 13 starters, with seven on offense and six on defense, plus both specialists.
Among the many standout players returning from both sides are the 2012 PSAC East Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year — Raider senior quarterback Zach Zulli and ESU redshirt-junior defensive tackle Bryan Thomson.
Game Background
• Despite a valiant comeback in the beginning of the second half last Saturday night, the Raiders dropped a 58-38 decision at Slippery Rock in PSAC crossover action to fall to 0-2 on the season. The Raiders were down 44-7 late in the first half before scoring 24 unanswered points in 8:03 of game time and cutting their deficit to 44-31 midway through the third quarter from Mehalik-Thompson Stadium.
• East Stroudsburg totaled 535 yards of total offense on Saturday — including 338 yards rushing, its most since gaining 368 yards in the first round of the 2005 NCAA playoffs — in a 70-7 romp at Seton Hill to improve to 2-0 on the season. The 70 points were the most ESU has scored in a game since the opener of the 2005 season.
• Despite the loss at Slippery Rock, multiple school records were broken and numerous milestones were achieved. Senior kicker Drew Newcomer drilled a 49-yard field goal that broke a 29-year-old school record, Zulli achieved his 11th career 300-yard passing game and set a school career record with 1,022 pass attempts.
• Zulli's three passing touchdowns in the game also give him 91 on his career, making him one of just six players in PSAC history with over 90 passing touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Sheldon Mayer returned a punt 85 yards for a touchdown late in the game for the first punt return score by a Red Raider since 1998.
Success at Seth Grove
• Shippensburg won seven games last season playing at SU Student Association Field at Seth Grove Stadium — a program record and the school's first undefeated season at home since 1999.
• The Red Raiders have won nine straight home games dating back to the 2011 season. It was a 44-14 home victory over the Warriors on November 5, 2011 that began the current run.
• During SU's nine-game home winning streak, the Red Raiders have outscored opponents by a 442-190 margin. Shippensburg has scored at least 36 points in all nine of the victories.
• The school record for the longest home winning streak is 11 games, a run that began on Sept. 26, 1925 (Dickinson JV) and lasted through Oct. 1, 1927 (Georgetown Freshmen).
• SU head coach Mark 'Mac' Maciejewski, currently in his third season, is 11-1 at Seth Grove Stadium. The only loss came against West Chester (52-17) on October 8, 2011.
Series History: Red Raiders vs. Warriors
• Shippensburg leads the overall series 29-17-2, and has been particularly dominant at home, holding a 17-6-1 advantage. The Raiders have won 11 of the last 13 meetings between the two teams, including the last two matchups at home.
• SU currently holds a four-game win streak vs. the Warriors, with SU's last loss to ESU coming in a 44-41 overtime defeat at East Stroudsburg during the 2008 season.
• The two teams first met in 1926 with Shippensburg earning a 7-0 home victory. Perhaps the most historic meeting between the two teams came in 1976, when Shippensburg hosted East Stroudsburg in the State Game. The Red Raiders, under head coach Joe Mark, battled longtime head coach Denny Douds and the Warriors to a 14-14 tie. Another historic clash came in the 1991 NCAA playoffs when SU beat ESU on the road in overtime, 34-33.
