Kate Zech scored on a breakaway in the 76th minute Tuesday as the Shippensburg University women's soccer team traveled to Mansfield and earned a 1-0 road win over the Mountaineers in a PSAC match at the MU Soccer Field.
Zech slipped a shot past the keeper for her first tally of the season and the goal held up as the game's lone tally. It was Zech's eighth career goal and fourth career game-winner for the Raiders.
Senior
Ashley Vellucci nearly added a second tally less than two minutes later but her shot hit the crossbar and caromed away.
For SU, the victory was a solid result given that Tuesday marked the team's second road trip of more than three hours in a four-day span.
"We had to grind it out, but it's a good win and it gets us level in the conference," head coach
Rob Fulton said afterward. "It's so difficult to win away from home in this conference, and anytime you can get points that's a bonus."
The two teams battled on a warm day on MU's grass surface and virtually matched one another from a statistical standpoint. SU managed a slim 13-12 advantage in shots and a 4-2 margin in corner kicks.
Both senior
Shelbie Rackley and MU keeper Alana Krieger recorded four saves. For Rackley, it is her second shutout of the season and eighth of her career.
Shippensburg returns home Saturday for a 2 p.m. matchup with Kutztown at David See Field.
