Austin Strine finished with the Day 1 lead in the decathlon as the Shippensburg University men's track & field team completed the first of three days of competition at the 2013 PSAC Outdoor Championships hosted by Millersville University.
Strine, who finished second in the heptathlon during the 2013 indoor season, has tallied 3386 points to establish an 11-point lead over Slippery Rock's Andrew Greenslade. The SU junior established new outdoor personal bests in the 100 (11.61 seconds) and the 400 meters (50.51 seconds) while matching his outdoor PR in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 4 ¾ inches. His efforts in the latter two events resulted in a combined 1549 points.
Also representing Shippensburg in the multis is freshman
Matthew Merritt and junior
David Kloepping, currently in 12th and 14th place respectively. Merritt improved his personal bests in the 100 meters and shot, while Kloepping posted a narrow improvement to his PR in the high jump.
On Friday, multis competition resumes at 10 a.m. while field events begin at noon. Track events begin with prelims at 1:05 p.m.
