QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team was eliminated from the 2013 PSAC Tournament on Thursday after ending up on the wrong end of a pitcher's duel, dropping a 2-0 decision to PSAC East rival West Chester in an elimination game at Veterans Park.
Shippensburg (31-11) got a complete-game effort from sophomore
Liz Parkins, who scattered six hits, walked just one and struck out six in suffering her first loss of the season.
West Chester (34-18) managed the only runs of the game via a bunting exhibition with one out in the seventh inning. A sacrifice bunt attempt by Ali Vavala went for a hit and without anybody covering second base, resulted in two runners in scoring position.
Consecutive squeeze bunts in the next two at-bats by Megan Kelly and Kelly Anderson both resulted in close plays at home and the runner being deemed safe on each fielder's choice.
SU got two runners in scoring position during the third inning and another runner to third in the sixth inning but could not ultimately plate a runner.
The Raiders, currently the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic Region, will await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament field on Monday (10 a.m. selection show on ncaa.com).
