SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team, seeded No. 2 in the Atlantic Region and ranked No. 21 in Division II, dropped a 6-0 decision to Bloomsburg in Game 2 of the 2013 NCAA Atlantic Region Championships being held at Robb Field.
Shippensburg (31-12) will play West Virginia State (41-13) in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Bloomsburg (31-17) will face Kutztown (30-21) at 11 a.m. Saturday. KU defeated WVSU in 10 innings, 3-1, in Game 1 of the tournament.
The Huskies established an early lead against SU junior
Emily Estep with a two-run homer in the first inning off the bat of Rachel Fredell.
In the bottom of the first, the Raiders got a leadoff slap-single from senior
Kiersten Darhower before sophomore
Maddie Justice was plunked, putting runners on first and second base with nobody out.
Bloomsburg pitcher Cait Paine appeared to slip as she delivered the pitch that hit Justice. The grounds crew was then asked to tend to the pitcher's circle, resulting in a 10-minute delay.
Once play resumed, Paine responded by retiring the next 19 batters she faced. Her only blemish the rest of the way came on a bad-hop single with one out in the seventh.
BU added one run in the fifth, two in the sixth and one more in the seventh.
Estep threw a complete game for the Raiders, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits with six strikeouts. Paine struck out nine and did not walk a batter.
