SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's lacrosse team held a halftime lead Friday in its PSAC clash with Edinboro but could not maintain its advantage in the second half, dropping a 14-8 decision to the Fighting Scots on a windy afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (3-6, 1-2 PSAC) got two goals and three assists from senior
Lindsey Kennedy, who became the SU record holder for career assists with her first helper on Friday. Kennedy has amassed 72 career assists and moved out of a tie for the record with Page Heath '04. She was once again a major force, as she finished the game with a team-high four caused turnovers in addition to three groundballs and two draw controls.
Sophomore
Garrie Grenfell made her first start of the season and scored twice for the Raiders. Junior
Bennett Widlake added two goals and two draw controls. Sophomore
Sheila Johnson and junior
Amanda Krok also scored for Shippensburg while senior
Roxanne Brown and sophomore
Courtney Kennedy provided assists.
Edinboro (4-4, 0-3 PSAC) trailed 5-4 at the intermission before erupting with seven consecutive goals. The Fighting Scots kept the Raiders off the scoreboard for the first 20 minutes of the second half to build an 11-5 lead with less than 10 minutes to play. SU answered with three goals to make it 11-8 with 6:54 remaining, but the Raiders could not muster another tally before the final whistle.
EU was bolstered Friday by its freshman goaltender, Autumn Held, whose strong play included 12 saves – several of which were made at point-blank range. The Fighting Scots got four goals from Shannon Rohrich and a hat trick from Alex DeReamer.
Freshman
Ally Frymoyer made two first-half saves for the Raiders and was replaced in goal for the second half by freshman
Summar Elgogari – who also finished with two saves.
Shippensburg will host Slippery Rock at 2 p.m. tomorrow from Robb Sports Complex. SU will “Stick it To Cancer” and will collect donations and sell T-shirts with the proceeds to be split evenly between breast cancer and ovarian cancer research through the American Cancer Society.
