SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team split a doubleheader with PSAC Eastern Division rival Millerville on Friday afternoon from Robb Field. The Raiders won the opener 1-0 in nine innings while the Marauders responded with a 1-0 victory in Game 2.
With the win in the opener, Shippensburg (28-9, 10-4 PSAC East) clinched the PSAC East No. 1 seed in next weekend's PSAC Tournament.
SU and Millersville (29-19, 5-9 PSAC East) combined for just one extra-base hit in 16 innings (a Marauder double in Game 2). A total of 26 base runners were left on base between the two games, but the afternoon was controlled by the pitchers for both teams.
Sophomore
Makenzie Lynn tossed an impressive 8.1 shutout innings in the opener, matching a career high of 11 strikeouts for the third time this season. Lynn did not allow a hit until the sixth inning and fanned eight of the first 11 batters she faced.
The Raiders left a runner on third base in three of the first four innings before the dramatic finale in the ninth. In the top of the frame, junior
Emily Estep entered with one out and allowed a single that loaded the bases before inducing a 1-2-3 double play to escape the jam.
In the bottom of the ninth, sophomores
Taylor Weisman and
Maddie Justice singled with one out. Junior
Kirstin McClune stepped into the box and sent a 1-0 pitch into center field on which Weisman was able to slide into home plate ahead of the catcher's tag to secure the victory.
Estep, who earned a Game 1 victory from her relief appearance, took the loss in Game 2 after the Raiders were limited to just three hits. She allowed an unearned run on three hits while striking out six in Game 2.
The Marauders got their only run in the second inning. After a fielding error and a double put runners on second and third with one out, Ginely Ortiz-Marrero dropped down a squeeze bunt that plated pitcher Brianna Andraos from third. Andraos allowed three hits and walked four in her shutout performance, striking out two.
Junior
Hilary Lyons had three hits and a stolen base in the doubleheader, including two of SU's three in the nightcap. Sophomore
Tyler Thompson had two hits, a walk and three stolen bases. Thompson has 48 stolen bases – including 30 this season – and is just four shy of Jill Mullan's school record (52; 2008-11).
SU concludes its regular season tomorrow at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader against East Stroudsburg from Robb Field. The Raiders will honor their two seniors –
Kiersten Darhower and
Jenn Deardorff – in a ceremony between games. Head coach
Bob Brookens will also be recognized before the game for achieving his 400th career victory earlier this season.
