SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's lacrosse team honored its five seniors Saturday before the final home game of the regular season but could not solve the riddle of visiting Bloomsburg, dropping a 16-4 decision to the Huskies from Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (4-9, 2-5 PSAC) was held to a season-low four goals, just two in each half, as Bloomsburg (5-7, 3-4 PSAC) vaulted ahead of the Raiders in the conference standings. SU has four PSAC games remaining over the next two weeks, but all of them are on the road.
Junior
Bennett Widlake was active for the Raiders in Saturday's game, netting the first goal of the second half to bring SU within four goals of the lead at the time. Widlake had two caused turnovers, two groundballs and three draw controls.
Junior
Liz French opened the scoring five minutes in off a nifty feed from senior
Lindsey Kennedy, but the Huskies countered with a 5-0 run over the next 19 minutes of play. French had three groundballs, a draw control and a caused turnover while Kennedy had four groundballs.
Sophomores
Courtney Kennedy and
Sheila Johnson also scored for the Raiders. Freshman
Ally Frymoyer made 10 saves, led the team with six groundballs and also had a pair of caused turnovers by intercepting passes from the circle.
Lindsey Kennedy was the fourth of five seniors honored in pre-game ceremonies, joining
Roxanne Brown,
Sarah Chrencik,
Erin Hains and
Jenna Simmons. The five seniors have combined for 267 career games, 150 career goals, 96 career assists and 28 victories. Hains made her first career start in Saturday's game.
SU heads to Erie next weekend. The Raiders face Mercyhurst at 3 p.m. Friday and Gannon at 5:30 p.m on Saturday.
