SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – After dropping a 2-1 decision in extra innings against PSAC Central front-runner Lock Haven in Saturday afternoon's opener from Robb Field, the Shippensburg University softball team bounced back in the nightcap with a 1-0 shutout behind the arm of junior
Emily Estep.
Playing in support of the Seton Hill women's lacrosse program with a pregame moment of silence, the Raiders (25-6) struggled in Game 1 against Lock Haven's (22-7) Brianna Jennings, who allowed just four hits and eventually hit the game-winning home run with two outs in the top of the ninth on a 1-0 pitch she crushed over the left-field fence.
Estep improved her season record to 12-3 with a complete-game effort in Game 2, allowing just five hits and fanning four. The Shippensburg offense again struggled to produce runs and totaled just three hits against LHU starter Sarah Morse, but managed to manufacture the game's lone and deciding run in the bottom of the third.
Junior left fielder
Hilary Lyons led off the frame with a hit-by-pitch, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. Senior right fielder
Kiersten Darhower then brought Lyons home with what would have been an RBI groundout, but the Bald Eagle first basemen jumbled the grounder and allowed Darhower to reach safely.
Darhower also knocked in Lyons to score SU's lone run in the opener after the game remained scoreless midway through the fifth inning. With two outs in the fifth, Lyons broke up Jennings's no-hit bid with a single back at the pitcher before stealing second and scoring on a Darhower RBI single through the left side.
Lock Haven tied the game in the top of the sixth, however, with an infield RBI single that followed a two-out double. Shippensburg managed base runners in both the seventh and ninth innings but failed to bring the runner home.
The Raiders return to PSAC East play next Friday with a home doubleheader against West Chester beginning at 2:30 p.m.
