Backed by stellar pitching performances from sophomore
Makenzie Lynn and junior
Emily Estep, the Shippensburg University softball team shutout Chowan in both games of a Sunday afternoon road doubleheader, winning 5-0 and 2-0, from Hawks Softball Field in Murfreesboro, N.C.
Lynn and Estep each gave up just four hits in complete-game shutouts for the Raiders (6-1), with Lynn fanning a career-high 10 batters in the opener and Estep following up with 11 strikeouts in the nightcap.
Shippensburg enjoyed a ton of production from its outfielders as senior right fielder
Kiersten Darhower went a combined 5-for-8 while junior left fielder
Hilary Lyons drove in two runs in Game 1 and went 4-for-6 overall. Sophomore center fielder
Tyler Thompson scored two runs in the opener and finished the day with three stolen bases.
The Raiders have 11 days off before they head to Salem, Va., for the annual West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament March 15-16. SU will play two games that Friday and three that Saturday.
Game 1: Shippensburg 5, Chowan 0
The Raiders wasted no time producing runs against the Hawks (3-13), as Thompson led off the game with a walk before stealing second and advancing to third on a Darhower infield single. Sophomore
Jessie Trammell and sophomore shortstop
Taylor Weisman then drove the base runners home with back-to-back RBI groundouts.
SU added another run in the third inning with the top of the lineup back up to the plate. Thompson reached on a bunt-single, stole second and scored two batters later with a Trammell double to right-center field for a 3-0 Shippensburg lead.
Sophomore first baseman
Maddie Justice later led off the sixth inning with a single down the left-field line. Freshman pinch runner
Courtney Kane then scored two at-bats later on a Lyons single up the middle.
Weisman and Justice each singled up the middle in the seventh and with the bases loaded with two outs, Lyons hit a single down the left-field line that plated Weisman for the final run of the game.
Game 2: Shippensburg 2, Chowan 0
With the game scoreless through three innings, the Raiders tacked on the first run of the game and the eventual game-winner when sophomore second baseman
Emmie Burke singled through the left side to score the pinch-running Kane from third base in the top of the fourth. Kane was running for sophomore third baseman
Liz Parkins – who led off the inning with a walk – and advanced to third on a single from freshman catcher
Taylor Llewellyn and a Lyons sacrifice bunt.
Estep pitched her way out of two jams in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, forcing a third-out groundout with runners on first and second in the fourth and a third-out fly out with runners at the corners in the fifth.
Cramer pinch-ran in the seventh inning and advanced to third on a groundout and passed ball. With two outs, junior
Kirstin McClune came in to pitch hit and brought home Cramer for the game's final run with a single to left field.
