The Shippensburg University women's lacrosse team nearly completed a feverish comeback Thursday evening in the final seven minutes of a physical non-conference matchup with Saint Leo, dropping an 8-7 decision to the Lions in Florida.
Shippensburg (2-3) trailed 8-3 with 18:44 remaining and held the Lions off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game. With 6:39 to play, the Raiders made the score 8-4 before adding three more goals in a three-minute span to make it an 8-7 contest.
SU lost the next draw control but got the ball back and had a couple of scoring opportunities in the final 45 seconds, yet could not net the equalizer.
Saint Leo (6-5) trailed 2-1 with 18:26 remaining in the first half before reeling off a four-goal run to lead at the intermission, 5-2. The Lions got 10 saves out of goalkeeper Brittany Millsap, while freshman
Ally Frymoyer was credited with eight saves.
Senior
Lindsey Kennedy opened the scoring at 4:21 and also led the team with five groundball pickups. She also had two caused turnovers. Junior
Bennett Widlake had a goal, three groundballs, a draw control and a caused turnover.
Sophomore
Sheila Johnson netted two goals, both on free positions – including the team's final tally with 3:13 to play. Fellow sophomore
Courtney Kennedy assisted on two goals late in the second half.
Senior
Roxanne Brown, junior
Amanda Krok and sophomore
Garrie Grenfell also added goals for the Raiders.
Among the defensive corps, senior
Jenna Simmons recorded four groundball pickups and a caused turnover.
Shippensburg will remain in the Sunshine State to play Florida Southern at 1 p.m. Saturday.
