SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Dylan Edgar led all scorers and matched his career high with 24 points on Saturday afternoon but the Shippensburg University men's basketball team was unable to fend off Cheyney, dropping a 79-68 decision to the Wolves on Senior Day from Heiges Field House in SU's regular season home finale.
By virtue of Kutztown's overtime loss to Bloomsburg on Saturday afternoon, the Raiders (7-18, 5-16 PSAC) have assured themselves a PSAC East playoff spot and a game next Sat., March 2, though their seed is yet to be determined.
Edgar shot 10-of-14 from the floor – matching his career high with 10 made field goals set twice before – and added a team-high eight rebounds and three assists. His scoring output matched the 24 points he scored earlier this season at home against Kutztown.
Sophomore
Reggie Charles shot a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line and totaled 14 points, a team-high four assists and two steals. Redshirt-freshman
Tyhiem Perrin also appeared in double figures with 13 points on a 5-of-8 effort from the field.
Freshman
Joe Lococo added seven points off the bench while sophomore
Akil Anderson recorded a career-high four assists to go along with four points.
Shippensburg fell behind to Cheyney (13-12, 11-10) early in the first half before battling back, eventually taking a 32-31 lead off a Charles layup with 1:42 left before halftime. The Wolves took the lead back on a Jason Sabb (22 points) three-pointer and entered intermission with a 36-34 advantage.
With the Raiders down by one just over five minutes into the second half, Cheyney used a 20-6 run to open up a game-high 15-point lead at 64-49 with 8:14 remaining. Shippensburg chipped it down to seven with a Lococo layup a few minutes later before Cheyney's Brandon Norfleet (nine points, nine assists) drained a three-pointer with 3:32 on the clock that nearly iced it. The Wolves would not let their lead slip below eight points for the remainder of the game.
Before the game, SU honored lone senior
Philip Sasko as well as team manager
Anthony Penn. Sasko earned his first career start and played a season-high six minutes.
The Raiders close out the regular season at Millersville on Wednesday night with an 8 p.m. tip from the Marauders' Pucillo Gymnasium. At the very least, the Raiders will play on the road in the PSAC East first round next Saturday as either a No. 5 or No. 6 seed, but if SU defeats Millersville and both Bloomsburg (at East Stroudsburg) and Mansfield (vs. Kutztown) also lose this upcoming Saturday, Shippensburg will earn the No. 4 seed and host the No. 5 seed that day.
