WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Despite four players in double figures on Wednesday night, the Shippensburg University men's basketball team was unable to continue the momentum from its two-game winning streak, dropping a 79-70 outcome at West Chester from WCU's Hollinger Field House.
Sophomore
Reggie Charles led the Raiders (7-17, 5-15 PSAC) with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting to go along with five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Redshirt-freshman
Tyhiem Perrin continued his hot late-season play with 15 points on a 10-of-10 effort from the free-throw line in addition to a team-high seven rebounds.
Junior
Dylan Edgar contributed 11 points and five rebounds while freshman
Joe Lococo saw his most extensive playing time since returning from an earlier injury, recording 11 points – his first double-digit scoring effort in over a month.
Shippensburg hung tight with the Golden Rams (18-6, 16-4) throughout the first half and grabbed the lead on two separate occasions past the midway point of the half. A 7-0 run gave the Raiders a 26-25 lead with 3:52 left before intermission before WCU eventually took a 31-28 lead into the break.
Up five just over two minutes into the second half, West Chester used an 11-0 run to open up a 16-point lead with 15:27 remaining. Shippensburg answered right back with an 11-0 run of its own, however, that cut its deficit back down to 46-41 with 12:38 on the clock.
After a jumper from WCU's Jon Breeden just over a minute later, the Raiders scored six straight points – four Perrin free throws surrounding a Lococo layup – to get within two, down 49-47 with under 10 minutes left. The Golden Rams snapped SU's run with 10 consecutive points of their own to open up a double-digit lead that they would not let slip below seven points for the remainder of the contest.
The Raiders return home on Saturday afternoon for a 3 p.m. Senior Day matchup against Cheyney from Heiges Field House. Before the game, Shippensburg will honor its lone senior,
Philip Sasko.
