SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Behind a 31-point, nine-assist effort from sophomore
Reggie Charles and three other Raiders scoring in double figures, the Shippensburg University men's basketball team took down PSAC East-leading and No. 9-ranked East Stroudsburg on Saturday afternoon during the annual “Play 4 Kay” game and Alumni Day from Heiges Field House.
The Raiders (7-16, 5-14 PSAC) avenged a 43-point loss earlier in the season at East Stroudsburg (20-3, 17-2) and shot a season-best 87 percent from the free-throw line on 27-of-31 shooting. SU held the Warriors – one of the top three-point shooting teams in the conference – to just 3-of-13 from three-point range.
The loss was ESU's first in 2013 and snapped its school-record-tying 14-game winning streak. The Warriors, the defending PSAC Champions, hadn't lost since way back on Dec. 18 at home to Lock Haven as Saturday's setback was their first in PSAC East play this season.
Charles surpassed the 30-point mark for the second time this season with a 9-of-14 effort from the field while making all three of his three-point attempts. He shot 10-of-11 from the free-throw line as his nine helpers now give him 17 over the last two games. He also added a career-high five steals and for the first time in his career, the sophomore played every minute of regulation.
Junior
Dylan Edgar posted a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds while sophomore
Akil Anderson also poured in 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting in 21 minutes of action.
Redshirt-freshman
Tyhiem Perrin scored in double figures for the fifth time in the last six games, finishing Saturday with 10 points and five rebounds. Sophomore
Sam Pygatt also had nine points.
Shippensburg fell behind in the early stages of the game as ESU held a 19-13 advantage just over 10 minutes into the first half. SU then went off on a 15-4 run spanning five minutes – with 11 points coming from Charles and Edgar – to take a 28-23 lead. A three-point play from Edgar with two minutes left sparked a run of seven straight Raider points to close the half, giving SU a 10-point lead, up 37-27, at the break.
An Edgar jumper on the first play of the second half completed a 26-8 Shippensburg run that started after ESU's 19-13 lead midway through the first half. ESU scored seven straight to cut the deficit to five before the Raiders used a 12-0 run – including two Charles treys – to open up a 17-point lead at 51-34 just under five minutes into the second half.
SU's lead hit 18 on several occasions and remained in double digits for all but sevens seconds (all in the final minute) for the remainder of the game.
The Raiders hit the road on Wednesday night with an 8 p.m. divisional matchup against West Chester from the Golden Rams' Hollinger Field House.
Notes: East Stroudsburg's nine-game road winning streak was snapped with the loss. The school record for ESU is 10 straight, which the Warriors achieved during their first 10 road games in school history, spanning the 1926-27 and 1927-28 seasons. The game that snapped that road winning streak was a 36-35 loss at Shippensburg on Feb. 18, 1928 – two days shy of 85 years ago today.
