Shelbie Rackley recorded her single-season school-record 10th shutout of the season in the first of two PSAC Semifinals on Friday but the No. 5-seed Shippensburg University women's soccer suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat in penalty kicks against top-seeded and No. 7-ranked California (Pa.) from the Vulcans's Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
The Raiders (11-5-3) recorded their second tie of the tournament and snapped Cal's (16-2-2) 16-game winning streak as SU held the top-ranked team in the Atlantic Region scoreless for just the second time this season.
California (Pa.) advances to the PSAC Championship Game at 1 p.m. Saturday against the winner of Friday's second semifinal between No.7-seed Gannon and No. 6-seed West Chester.
Rackley made seven saves in net as the Vulcans held a dominant 14-3 advantage in shots and a 5-0 lead in corner kicks. The Raiders were held to just one shot after halftime as an open shot by junior
Kate Zech in the final minute of the first overtime hit the post. Cal goalkeeper Ashley Magruda then recovered the ball to prevent any rebound attempt.
The Raiders went first in the penalty-kick shootout – their second shootout in four days after advancing past Edinboro, 4-3, in the PSAC Quarterfinals on Tuesday – but made just two of their five attempts as the Vulcans advanced to the PSAC Championship game for the third consecutive season.
In two games this season, the Raiders and Vulcans have combined for just one goal in 200 minutes of action.
Shippensburg was ranked No. 3 in the region entering this week as the top six teams qualify for the NCAA Tournament. The Raiders will find out on Monday evening whether they've earned a national postseason bid for the first time in school history. The selection show begins at 7:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
