SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The top-ranked and undefeated Shippensburg University field hockey team hosts the 2013 PSAC Field Hockey Championships this Friday and Saturday from Robb Sports Complex as the No. 1 seed in the conference in search of its second PSAC championship in school history.
The 17-0 Raiders will play No. 4-seed Bloomsburg (13-6) on 1 p.m. Friday after the No. 6 Huskies defeated fifth-seeded IUP 2-0 in the PSAC Quarterfinals on Tuesday. SU defeated BU 1-0 in two overtimes earlier this season with a game-winning goal from senior
Megan Jett with 8:38 left in the sudden-death home victory on Sept. 28.
The second semifinal on Friday will start at approximately 3:30 p.m. between No. 2-seed Millersville (16-2) and No. 3-seed West Chester (14-4), which defeated sixth-seeded East Stroudsburg 6-1 in Tuesday's other PSAC Quarterfinal.
The winners of the semifinal matches will play for the PSAC Field Hockey Championship at 2:30 p.m. Saturday from Robb Sports Complex.
Admission for each match has been set by the PSAC at $7 for adults and $2 for students while students of PSAC-member institutions receive free admission with their student identification card.
Shippensburg is looking to reverse recent history in the conference tournament. The Raiders were defeated in the PSAC finals by Bloomsburg in the 2006, 2009 and 2011 tournaments. SU also lost in the semifinals of the 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012 tournaments (to IUP, Bloomsburg, East Stroudsburg and Millersville, respectively).
SU's only PSAC Championship came in 2005, when the Raiders routed Kutztown 6-2 in the semifinals before earning a memorable come-from-behind victory over Bloomsburg, 5-4, in the title game from Robb Sports Complex.
The Raiders are one of two remaining undefeated teams in the country and have out-scored the other three PSAC semifinalists by an 8-3 margin in four matchups this season. Included in those four games are 4-2 and 2-1 victories over the defending PSAC-champion and two-time defending NCAA-champion Golden Rams.
SU leads the PSAC in scoring margin this season with a 3.04 mark (69 goals scored, 16 goals against), as senior goalkeeper
Carenna Neely is second in the PSAC and third in the country with a 0.95 goals-against average.
Offensively, SU is spearheaded by three double-digit goal-scorers – senior
Lauren Taylor (a team-high 14 goals), senior
Bre White (13) and Jett (11) – as well as senior
Taylor Bender with nine goals.
White leads the team with 11 assists and 37 points while Jett has caged a PSAC-best five game-winning goals this season. Defensively, freshman
Taylor Fisher ranks first on the team and tied for fourth in the PSAC with six defensive saves.
