Women’s Basketball Defeats Cheyney 76-68 With Another Strong Free-Throw Outing

Trailing 37-36 at the break, SU rallies in second half; Raiders shoot 79.5 percent from the line

The Shippensburg University women's basketball team capitalized on another stellar performance at the free-throw line on Saturday afternoon to overcome a one-point deficit at halftime and ultimately claim a 76-68 victory at Cheyney.

Shippensburg (4-1, 2-0 PSAC East) was a perfect 14-of-14 from the line in the first half but entered halftime trailing 37-36. The Raiders rallied in the second half, out-scoring the Wolves 40-31 and going 17-of-25 at the foul line to finish with a 79.5 percentage from the free-throw line.

For the second game in a row, sophomore Stephanie Knauer scored a team-high 21 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the field and 9-of-12 from the line. Knauer has been the leading scorer with 20 or more points in each of Shippensburg's four wins this season.

Freshman Lauren Gold chipped in with 18 points and led the team with both eight assists and six rebounds. Gold went 6-of-6 from the free-throw line before missing her last attempt, bringing her streak of 34 consecutive made free throws to an end.

Senior Sarah Strybuc also totaled 18 points and was 6-of-8 from the charity stripe. Strybuc has scored exactly 18 points in each of the last three games.

Cheyney (0-3, 0-2) was led by Kyra Hines-Allen who recorded 21 points and seven rebounds. Lachelle Miller added 13 points and five rebounds while Kia Whitney-Duncan supported the offensive effort with a game-high 11 assists.

Shippensburg returns to action next Sun., Dec. 1 when it returns home to face Bowie State at 1 p.m.

Notes: SU has scored 152 second-half points in its last three games…Shippensburg went 22-of-22 from the free-throw line before it recorded its first miss midway through the second half.
