The No. 1 seed in the South Region for the second consecutive year, the Shippensburg University field hockey team travels south this week to Virginia for the 2013 NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championships in search of its second national title in school history.
The Raiders (18-1) will face South Region No. 2-seed Millersville (19-2) at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the second of two NCAA Semifinals from the USA Field Hockey Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va. The Marauders defeated South Region No. 3 seed and two-time defending NCAA champion West Chester 1-0 in NCAA Quarterfinal action on Saturday.
The North Region semifinal will be played at noon Friday between top seed and undefeated LIU Post (20-0) and No. 3 seed Merrimack (13-5).
A Friday victory for SU would lead to its second-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championship game, which will be held Sunday at 1:15 p.m. from the L.R. Hill Complex on the campus of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.
All-session tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for students/children. Single-game rates are $20 for adults, $15 for students/children with a $10 rate listed for "groups."
Tickets can be bought through
ncaa.com/tickets, at the ODU box office at the Constant Center, or at the ticket windows on the day of the games. The GPS address for Friday's semifinal is L.R. Hill Sports Complex, 4251 Powhatan Avenue, Norfolk, VA 23529.
Both semifinals and the national championship game will be streamed live online at ncaa.com/liveschedule. A live stats link will also be available in the coming days.
The Raiders and Marauders -- ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the NFHCA Coaches Poll, respectively, for the majority of the regular season -- are 1-1 against each other in 2013 with two combined goals in both games (1-0 finals).
A golden goal off the stick of senior
Megan Jett with 7:05 left in the first overtime gave the Raiders a 1-0 home win over the Marauders on Oct. 12, giving MU its first setback of the season. Millersville avenged the loss in the PSAC Championship Game on Nov. 9, however, with a 1-0 win over the then-undefeated Raiders on their home turf.
Shippensburg is making its 10th appearance in the NCAA playoffs, all under 15th-year head coach
Bertie Landes. With the exception of the 2007 season, the Raiders have reached the national tournament every year since 2003 – a run of 10 appearances out of the past 11 seasons.
In 2010, the Raiders advanced to their first-ever NCAA title game, where they fell 1-0 to UMass-Lowell, and in 2012, the Raiders fell in the NCAA Semifinals in a 3-2 thriller to the Golden Rams.
SU's lone national championship came in 1979 when it won the AIAW (Assocation for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) Division II Field Hockey Tournament -- to this day the only team in school history to win a national championship in any sport.
