SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Joe Lococo scored a career-high 33 points and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds Saturday night but it was not enough as the Shippensburg University men's basketball team dropped an 86-73 decision to regional rival Shepherd in the final game of the 2013 Wolf's Bus Lines Classic.
Shippensburg (0-2) played even with Shepherd (3-1) in the second half as each team scored 48 points in the final frame, but the Raiders could not overcome a 13-point halftime deficit.
Lococo's 33 points are the most by a Raider in regulation since Chuck Davis put up 37 points in a 70-64 loss at West Chester on Jan. 6, 2007. It's the most points by an SU player inside Heiges Field House in eight years, as Davis dropped 39 points on Ohio Valley back on Dec. 7, 2005.
Overall, Lococo was 13-of-15 at the free-throw line but the rest of the Raiders shot just 4-of-11 at the charity stripe. His efforts led to a spot on the 2013 Wolf's Bus Lines Classic All-Tournament Team.
Freshman
Abe Massaley chipped in 15 points, while junior
Mark Wilmer contributed eight points and seven rebounds. Redshirt-freshman
Marcus Williams matched Lococo's team high with nine rebounds.
The visiting Rams scored 46 points in the paint and managed 20 points on second-chance opportunities. Brantley Osborne finished up as the Wolf's Bus Lines Classic Tournament MVP after a 13-point, four-assist, two-steal effort Saturday. Osborne had 29 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and seven steals in two games this weekend. Morgan McDonald added 16 points and 16 rebounds for the Rams and also earned All-Tournament honors.
Shippensburg opens PSAC East play at 8 p.m. Wednesday versus Lock Haven inside Heiges Field House.
