SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — The Shippensburg University football team seeks its fourth consecutive win when it travels to PSAC Eastern Division newcomer Lock Haven on Saturday afternoon for a noon contest from Hubert Jack Stadium.
A student radio broadcast of the game will be available on 88.7 FM in Shippensburg and can be accessed online at www.wsyc.org. Perry Mattern returns as the play-by-play voice of the Red Raiders while Jimmy Wright will provide commentary.
SU entered 2013 as the preseason favorite in the PSAC Eastern Division for the first time in history after an 11-2 season in which it reached the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs. Lock Haven switched from the PSAC Western Division to the Eastern Division this season after Seton Hill joined the conference and took LHU's spot in the West. The Bald Eagles were picked to finish sixth in their inaugural East season in the PSAC East Preseason Coaches Poll.
Shippensburg returns 29 letter-winners, including eight starters on defense, six on offense and its two kicking specialists. Lock Haven returns 36 letter-winners as well as 27 starters.
Game Background
• SU racked up 686 yards of total offense (fourth-most in a game in school history) and matched a school record for most points scored in a single game on Saturday en route to a 73-27 home victory over Seton Hill.
• Senior defensive end
Jake Metz continued his record-setting streak in another stand-out performance, leading the team with a career-high 11 tackles, including a single-game school record six tackles for loss (TFL) and matching his career high with three sacks. For his efforts, Metz was named the PSAC Eastern Division Defensive Player of the Week.
• Metz's 13 TFLs lead the PSAC as his 2.6-per-game average is the best mark in Division II. The senior is also tied for first in D-II in sacks per game with 1.6. Junior wide receiver
Trevor Harman, who caught three more touchdowns vs. Seton Hill, is tied for the Division II lead with nine receiving scores this season.
• Also on Saturday, Lock Haven fell on the road to PSAC West foe Edinboro, 31-6. The Fighting Scots led 17-6 at halftime and tacked on a touchdown in both the third and fourth quarter to secure the victory.
• Despite the loss, Lock Haven is having its most successful season in several years, as its two wins mark its first multiple-win season since 2006. With a home victory against Cheyney to close out 2012 and home wins against West Virginia State and the Wolves again this season, the Bald Eagles are currently riding a three-game home winning streak — their first three-game home winning streak since 2002.
