SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University football team racked up 686 yards of total offense and matched a school record for most points scored in a single game on Saturday afternoon en route to a 73-27 victory over PSAC Western Division foe Seton Hill from SU Student Association Field at Seth Grove Stadium.
The 73 points the Red Raiders (3-2) scored ties a single-game school record previously set vs. Lock Haven in 1995 and vs. Kutztown last season.
The victory over the conference-newcomer Griffins (0-5) -- in the first-ever contest between the two programs -- also ties another school record as SU has now won 11 consecutive home games, a streak that dates back to 2011. It ties the 11-game home win streak set during the 1925 season that lasted until midway through the 1927 season.
"We're more comfortable with each other, the chemistry is there," SU head coach
Mark Maciejewski '92/'96M said. "And we're putting those right pieces of the puzzle together and I think we're doing a good job of that right now."
A fumble by senior quarterback
Zach Zulli on the second play of the game gave SHU the ball as the visitors converted a four-play, 31-yard drive for a touchdown to put SU behind 7-0. On SU's next play from scrimmage, Zulli connected on a pass to wide-open junior
Shannon Maura up the right sideline for a 65-yard touchdown.
The touchdown began a run of 35 unanswered points to give SU a comfortable 35-7 lead midway through the second quarter. The first half ended with Shippensburg having totaled 334 yards of offense and taking a 42-20 lead into the locker room.
Senior defensive end
Jake Metz continued his record-setting streak in another stand-out performance on Saturday. Metz lead the team with a career-high 11 tackles, including a single-game school record six tackles for loss (TFL).
Metz also matched his career high with three sacks, equaling his mark set last season against ESU. His 29 yards also breaks his previous career high of 23 yards set in last year's NCAA playoff loss to Winston-Salem State. Metz's TFL total surpasses his previous single-game high of three, as he now has 50 career tackles for loss and sits third on the school's all-time list behind
Cody Fleming (52.5; 2009-12) and Maciejewski (50; 1989-92).
Zulli finished the day completing 32-of-43 passes for a season-high 395 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. The Red Raider quarterback also ran for two touchdowns, and with 422 yards of total offense, moved into eighth place on the PSAC's all-time Top 10 in the category with 9,630 yards. Zulli also cracked the Top 10 of the PSAC's all-time career passing list as he sits 10th on the list with 8,989 yards.
The Red Raider defense totaled five sacks and held the Seton Hill offense to under 200 yards, the second week in a row it held the opposing offense to less than 250 yards. SU has 17 sacks in its last three games after not tallying any in the first two games of the season.
Junior wide receiver
Trevor Harman lead the way for the receiving corps with 13 receptions for 128 yards and three touchdowns – his fifth career game with at least three touchdown catches. The receiver moved up to seventh on the PSAC's career receiving touchdowns list with 37.
Sophomore quarterback
Chris Lawshe led the Red Raiders in rushing and set a new single-game career high with 98 yards on the ground. This marks the second time this season the dual-threat quarterback has led Shippensburg in rushing as he broke his previous career-high of 97 yards that he set earlier this season against East Stroudsburg.
Shippensburg will travel to Lock Haven on Saturday for a noon PSAC Eastern Division match-up with the Bald Eagles.
Notes:
• SU's 688 yards of total offense on Saturday is its fourth highest single-game output in school history. The Red Raiders put up 719 last year at ESU and 723 at Kutztown, while the school record remains 749 against Lock Haven back in 2007.
• SU scored 10 touchdowns in one game for the 10th time in school history on Saturday.
• With the exception of a 67-yard run by backup quarterback Lenny Dowell and a stupendous 40-yard heave by wide receiver turned emergency quarterback Jarvis McClam, Seton Hill was limited to 91 yards of total offense on 59 plays (1.5 yards per play) by the Red Raider defense. SU's 16 tackles for loss are its most in one game since recording 18.0 in last season's home victory over Millersville.
• SU is averaging 50.0 points per game over the last four contests. Despite being shutout in the season opener, the Red Raiders rank fifth in the league in scoring offense through five games.
•
Sheldon Mayer, whose first career pass Saturday resulted in a 46-yard touchdown to junior
Quran Kent, added 39 more punt return yards to his season total. His 269 punt return yards puts him 164 yards ahead of any other returner in the PSAC. The school record for punt return yards in a season is 508, set by current Miami Dolphin Brent Grimes in 2005.
• Shippensburg continues to pick up the pace on offense. SU's average length of a touchdown drive this season is 1:39. Of SU's 26 touchdown scoring drives, 10 have come in less than a minute. Only three have lasted three minutes or longer. Four of SU's 10 touchdown drives Saturday lasted 51 seconds or less.
• Harman's nine receiving touchdowns leads the PSAC. He ranks second in receiving yards to SRU's John Schademan and second in total receptions behind Kutztown's Alex Tonnies. His scoring output ranks third in the league behind Bloomsburg's Franklyn Quiteh (14 rushing TDs) and WCU's Rondell White (12 rushing TDs).
• Harman's 13 receptions are the second-most in a single game in history, tying Al Bowman (1969 vs. IUP) and Jamie Ware (1999 vs. West Chester). Harman's 18 receptions at Kutztown last season remains the school record.
• Metz's 13.0 TFLs lead the PSAC and are four more than any other player in the league. His 8.0 sacks are tied for the league lead with Bloomsburg's Larry Webster.
• The Red Raiders managed their first interception of the season when
Mike Goode picked off a pass in the first quarter that was deflected at the line by Metz. SU and fellow PSAC East school Millersville were two of just three teams in Division II without an interception entering play on Saturday.
•
Nate Schmidt is averaging 40.9 yards per punt over 28 boots this season, ranking fourth in the PSAC. His current average would rank fifth-best in SU single-season history and would be a career single-season best by 4.2 yards.
•
Drew Newcomer made his 21st career field goal in Saturday's game. He is three shy of tying Craig Lough (1998-00, 2002) for fifth-most in school history.
