SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — Junior
Carolyn Smith scored a golden goal just over one minute into the second overtime period Saturday evening that propelled the Shippensburg University women's soccer team to a pivotal 1-0 conference victory over East Stroudsburg at David See Field.
A hard-fought, seesaw affair culminated with a clinical setup off a flip throw by senior
Meghan Mahon. Freshman
Casey Rightmyer collected Mahon's throw and left a touch for Smith, who ripped a shot into the lower-left portion of the net from 15 yards out.
The finish is Smith's second career golden goal and third overall; she opened the 2012 season with a game-winner in the first overtime of a 2-1 victory over Charleston.
Shippensburg (7-4, 6-4 PSAC) improved to 5-0 at home this season and surpassed its win total of 2012. SU has won every match at David See Field this season by shutout, including each of the last four matches by a 1-0 margin.
Senior
Shelbie Rackley was integral to Shippensburg's shutout, posting eight saves in the contest. Among her many key stops was a redirect off the crossbar in the second half following an ESU free kick.
East Stroudsburg (6-4-1, 6-4-1) finished with a 21-14 margin in shots and had multiple scoring chances in the contest. In the 24th minute, Syrandin Deere Vester fired a shot that was blocked on the goal line by a SU defender. Sammi Jo Hughes rang a shot off the post in the 80th minute and Michelle Gogolen was stopped at point-blank range just one minute into overtime.
Late in the first half, SU nearly snuck in a goal when junior
Alyssa House fired a long, dipping shot from close to 40 yards out that Warrior goalkeeper Brittain Wagner nicked off the crossbar.
With the exception of a 3-2 overtime victory at Mercyhurst, SU has either shutout its opponent or been shutout in every game.
Shippensburg will host Lock Haven at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday from David See Field.
