SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — In a Saturday afternoon matchup of the top-two teams in Division II, it took the second golden goal of the season from senior
Megan Jett to propel the No. 1 Shippensburg University field hockey to a 1-0 victory over No. 2 Millersville at Robb Sports Complex.
Jett scored her ninth goal of the season with 7:05 remaining in the first overtime by converting her own rebound on a breakaway. A 2-on-1 rush developed at midfield after senior
Bre White took possession and drew a defender. White responded with a head-long pass to Jett, whose initial shot was stopped by the Millersville keeper. Jett then sent a shot long the end line that trickled its way into the goal.
"We knew it was going to be a tough game," Jett said afterward. "We had to come out and play our best, and we did."
Shippensburg (12-0, 5-0 PSAC) posted a 15-7 advantage in penalty corners on Saturday, including an 8-2 margin in the second half and a 4-1 margin in overtime. Millersville (9-1, 4-1) held a 5-4 shots advantage at halftime but the Raiders limited the Marauders to just two shots in the second half and overtime.
"Statistically we had the advantage coming into the game, but Millersville is an incredible team," head coach
Bertie Landes said after the game. "We knew we had to be at our best today."
Both teams put forth a stellar defensive effort in the contest. The Marauders had allowed just four goals in nine games entering Saturday's contest and only yielded the overtime strike. The Raiders got five saves from senior goalkeeper
Carenna Neely, who remains unbeaten in her collegiate career.
The victory extended SU's regular-season winning streak to 22 consecutive matches and its home winning streak to 16 consecutive matches.
"We have to keep our edge because the season is not over," Landes said. "We just need to keep playing the way we have been playing."
"We can't be complacent," Jett echoed. "We have to go at our next six games harder than ever and keep going strong."
Shippensburg travels to Kutztown on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Golden Bears.
