SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Three players scored in double figures on Friday night but the Shippensburg University women's basketball team was unable to defeat two-time defending PSAC champion Edinboro, dropping a 63-53 decision in the first of two weekend PSAC crossover games from Heiges Field House.
The Raiders (7-4, 3-3 PSAC) were paced by 15 points from senior
Shawna Wert and 11 points each from senior
Dana Wert and freshman
Stephanie Knauer.
Dana Wert contributed a team-high six assists while Knauer and senior
Raediah Lyles (six points) each pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
Shippensburg held Edinboro (8-2, 5-1) – which finished last season 30-2 and was ranked as high as No. 3 in the country – to over 15 points below its scoring average (78.3 per game). The Fighting Scots were led by the conference's two leading scorers entering the weekend, Samantha Blazetic and Kiara Brown, who led all scorers on Friday night with 16 points and 17 points, respectively.
Edinboro jumped out to a 12-1 lead five minutes into the game and held the Raiders without a field goal for nearly eight minutes, as Knauer laid in a put-back with 12:12 remaining in the half to cut the Edinboro lead to 12-5. The Fighting Scots eventually pushing the lead to 16, up 34-18, entering halftime.
Shippensburg came out hot to start the second half, going on a 10-2 run to cut the EU lead in half and into single-digits, down eight, 36-28, four minutes into the half. Shippensburg would only get as close as seven points the rest of the way, down 41-34 with over 11 minutes left.
SU will square off against Slippery Rock tomorrow evening at 5:30 from Heiges Field House.
