Box Score

The Shippensburg University women's basketball team began its final PSAC crossover of the season Saturday with a 15-5 run and never looked back, building a 21-point halftime lead over California (Pa.) and a 36-point advantage in the second half en route to a dominant 82-50 victory over the Vulcans inside the Convocation Center.

Shippensburg (9-5, 5-4 PSAC) recorded its largest victory over California (10-3, 6-3 PSAC) since the 1999 PSAC Quarterfinals with balanced scoring, as five Raiders finished in double figures, and a dominant 31-of-34 effort at the free-throw line. SU made its first 24 free-throw attempts Saturday and did not miss until the 7:19 mark of the second half, finishing the game 91.2 percent at the charity stripe.

Seniors Shawna Wert and Dana Wert led the Raiders with 17 points each. Shawna was 11-of-11 at the free-throw line, while Dana was 10-of-10 and had six assists to just one turnover. Their efforts mark the eighth and ninth times in school history that a Raider has been perfect at the free-throw line with at least 10 attempts in a game.

Junior Sarah Strybuc achieved her first career double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing a career-high 10 rebounds in addition to four steals and three assists. Strybuc was 3-of-6 from three-point range and 3-of-4 at the free-throw line.

Freshman Stephanie Knauer reached double figures for the 11th time in 14 games, scoring 13 points. Knauer also had seven rebounds and two assists.

Off the bench, freshman Caitlyn Deeter had an excellent game, making key contributions in both halves. Deeter scored a career-high 10 points, shooting 4-of-5 from the floor, and came down with two rebounds.

California finished the game 16-of-70 (22.9 percent) from the floor, which marks the lowest field-goal percentage by a Raider opponent since Salem International shot 12-of-54 (22.2 percent) in a 71-34 loss on Dec. 4, 2009. The Vulcans especially struggled in the first half, shooting 6-of-37 (16 percent) from the field. Over the same stretch, SU was 11-of-26 (42 percent) from the field and was 14-of-14 at the free-throw line.

Shippensburg resumes PSAC East play at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday with a road contest at Bloomsburg.

Notes: Saturday's game is the first time Shippensburg has had five players finish in double figures since Feb. 26, 2011, an 89-75 win over East Stroudsburg…SU routed Cal 85-48 on Feb. 23, 1999 in the PSAC Quarterfinals, a game it led 40-8 at halftime…SU had shot less than 67 percent from the free-throw line in each of its last three games despite having at least 30 attempts in each of those contests until breaking out on Saturday…SU's season high in free throws remains a 34-of-41 effort in Game 3 of the season, a 76-68 victory over West Liberty…Shawna Wert's 11-of-11 effort at the free-throw line is the third-best effort in school history, as Tracy Spencer went 18-of-18 vs. Clarion (1/13/96) and current assistant coach Jen Grassel was 12-of-12 vs. Edinboro (1/19/02).
