Kate Zech both scored and assisted on each other's goals with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation on Saturday afternoon to give the Shippensburg University women's soccer team a 2-0 victory at Slippery Rock that ended a three-game winless streak.
The Raiders (4-4-3, 2-4-2 PSAC) ended the scoreless tie on a 3-on-2 breakaway in the 81st minute when Zech's through-ball left Leverentz alone with the Rock (6-3-0, 3-3-0) goalkeeper for the game-winner. The goal was Leverentz's second of the season and ended a 402-minute Shippensburg scoring drought that spanned the course of the last five games.
SU doubled its lead to 2-0 two-and-a-half minutes later when Leverentz returned the favor, sending a pass through traffic to the far post, where Zech connected on her first goal of 2012 and her first in the last 16 games dating back to last season.
Junior goalkeeper
Shelbie Rackley made four saves and completed her third shutout of the season. Leverentz, Zech, junior
Rachel Hess and sophomore
Carolyn Smith finished with two shots each.
The Raiders finish their four-game PSAC road trip on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. match at Mansfield.
