Sam Langone combined for nine points on Sunday afternoon as the No. 4 Shippensburg University field hockey team blanked host Saint Michael's, 8-0, in the second of two games this weekend from the DoubleTree Fall Classic in Colchester, VT.
The Raiders (2-0) out-shot the Purple Knights (0-2) 39-4 and held a 14-1 advantage in penalty corners. Scoring began in the eighth minute when junior transfer
Taylor Bender scored her second goal in her first two games with the Raiders on a pass from Langone off a penalty corner. Langone got on the board herself three minutes later with a shot to the right post off an assist from White.
After a 26-minute scoreless drought, SU made a statement beginning with senior
Taylor Jones netting her first goal of the season on an assist from Bender off a penalty corner three minutes into the second half – the first of three pull-away goals in the first five minutes of the second period.
SU gained control and less than a minute later, White scored a penalty shot to give the Raiders a 4-0 lead. Junior
Lauren Taylor scored unassisted two minutes after with a shot to the left post.
White cashed in on her fifth goal of the season with an assist from Langone at the 44th minute. After another 23-minute dry spell, junior
Brittany Jett wrapped up the scoring with two goals in a three-minute span. Freshman
Molly Stuart assisted on the first strike.
Bender and White led all players with 9 shots each. Junior
Carenna Neely earned the start in the cage and made two saves in one half of action, while senior
Ciarra Delost and freshman
Taylor Webster – making her collegiate debut – combined to finish the shutout in the second half.
Shippensburg returns to action on Thursday with a road matchup at Millersville beginning at 4 p.m. Last year, the Marauders upset SU in the fourth game of the season, 3-2.
