SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team received goals from senior
Rhonda Runion and junior
Ashley Vellucci on Saturday afternoon and had to survive a late rush by visiting Clarion to earn a 2-1 victory over the Golden Eagles from David See Field.
Shippensburg (3-2-2, 1-2-1 PSAC) took the lead in the 19th minute when Runion sent a high-arching shot into the top left portion of the net, giving the Raiders an early cushion. Runion leads the Raiders with three goals this season.
SU built its lead in the 58th minute when Vellucci knocked in a rebound off a corner kick by junior
Rachel Hess. It was the first goal of the season for Vellucci, and the second straight game that the Raiders scored a goal off a corner kick by Hess.
Clarion (1-2-2, 1-2-0 PSAC) out-shot the Raiders by a 17-11 margin and was active throughout the contest – particularly in the final 20 minutes. The Golden Eagles got within a goal in the 86th minute when a through ball from Casey Harsch unintentionally deflected off a Raider and ricocheted into the net.
SU comes away with four points from its PSAC weekend after Saturday's win and the tie against IUP yesterday.
Shippensburg will host West Chester at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday from David See Field.
