Shippensburg University men's track & field sophomore Steve Waithe will compete Friday in the triple jump at the 2012 IAAF World Junior Championships being held at Olympic Stadium in Barcelona, Spain.

Waithe, a dual citizen of the United States of America and Trinidad & Tobago, is representing Trinidad & Tobago in the competition.  His brother Stann represented Trinidad & Tobago at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing on the 4x400-meter relay.

Friday's qualifying heats begin at 6:05 p.m. locally in Barcelona (12:05 p.m. EST) and will be held from the same venue in which SU head cross country coach Steve Spence '85 completed a marathon while representing the USA at the 1992 Summer Olympics. If Waithe qualifies for the finals, he will compete on Sunday at 6:35 p.m. locally (12:35 p.m. EST).

Waithe, the 2012 PSAC Men's Outdoor Track & Field Freshman of the Year, solidified his spot on the Trinidad & Tobago national team after landing a jump of 15.89 meters (52 feet, 1 ¾ inches) for a third-place finish at the 2012 CAC Championships held in El Salvador. By comparison, that mark is just five centimeters shy of the all-time PSAC record (15.94 meters; 52 feet, 3 ½ inches) set in 1957 by West Chester's Bill Sharpe.

Waithe's performance in El Salvador stands as a new PR and an improvement upon his school record of 15.71 meters (51 feet, 6 ½ inches) set at the 2012 PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Waithe was named the 2012 Field MVP of the Meet for that performance and went on to become SU's first men's All-American in the triple jump with a fourth-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
