PUEBLO, Col. — Freshman
Steve Waithe became SU's first men's All-American in the triple jump with a fourth-place finish on an extremely windy Saturday inside the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl as the Shippensburg men's track & field team wrapped up its season on the final day of the 2012 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships.
Due to the wind, Waithe's opening jump was planned as a “safety” but ended up being the second-best mark of the prelims by any competitor, as he landed a mark of 50 feet, 9 ½ inches. Four of his five successful jumps on Saturday landed at least 15 meters (49-plus feet), with his last of the competition ultimately being his best at 50 feet, 10 inches.
Senior
Stephen Schelander made his NCAA outdoor championships debut and came up just one spot shy of All-America honors for the Raiders, placing ninth in 4:17.86. In a race that featured a pedestrian pace for most of the way, Schelander began his kick just before the final 400 meters but had to navigate through a crowd on the last lap, with some bumping occurring as the runners tried to make their break.
Freshman
Derek Nothstein landed one successful javelin throw in his NCAA debut competition – a toss of 202 feet, 6 inches that resulted in a 12th-place finish. Nothstein, the 2012 PSAC champion as a rookie, recorded fouls on his final two attempts. His third and final throw was a very solid effort but was ultimately voided as a result of his feet landing beyond the runway line.
Saturday marked the final collegiate competition for Schelander, a decorated student-athlete who made five appearances at NCAA meets in his career (three in cross country, once indoors and once outdoors). On the track, Schelander was a 17-time PSAC placewinner, a NCAA indoor All-American with the DMR this season and a PSAC indoor champion in the mile.
