SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Monae Baker led a group of four players in double figures on Saturday afternoon as the Shippensburg University women's basketball team defeated Mansfield, 73-60, from Heiges Field House.
After notching her SU career-high in points on Wednesday night, Baker followed up that performance by going 8-of-14 from the field and scoring a game-high 18 points to go along with seven rebounds. It was Baker's fifth straight game with at least 18 points, as the senior is now just 23 points shy of 1,000 for her career.
Junior
Shawna Wert made all nine of her free throw attempts en route to scoring 15 points and six rebounds, while junior
Dana Wert added 11 points and team highs of four assists and three steals.
Despite getting called for her fourth foul of the game just over two minutes into the second half, junior
Caitlin Bamberger – who played just seven minutes in the half as a result – finished the game with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting in addition to three rebounds.
Sophomore
Codi McMaster scored a career-high nine points in addition to four rebounds, while sophomore
Sarah Strybuc sank two three-pointers and finished with seven points.
The Raiders went 23-of-26 from the free throw line – including 9-of-10 in the final 10 minutes to seal the victory – as the 88.5 percent clip is the best the team has shot from the line in a game all season.
Shippensburg (11-9, 8-8 PSAC) got off to a slow start out of the gate, falling behind 10-0 less than three minutes in. The Raiders responded by going on a 13-5 run to close the deficit to 15-13 with 12:30 left in the half.
Just over five minutes later, SU grabbed its first lead of the game, up 22-21, with a Bamberger free throw. Mansfield (7-13, 4-12 PSAC) scored the next seven points, however, to go back up six, 28-22, with 4:57 remaining.
From there, Shippensburg closed the half by outscoring Mansfield 11-5 – finished off by a
Shawna Wert three-point play with six seconds left – to enter the break up 35-33.
The Raiders opened up the second half by going on a 10-3 run over the first five minutes to grab a 45-36 advantage. The lead would later swell to as many as 14 at five different instances in the half, but the Mounties were unable to get closer than 10 points.
SU remains two games ahead of East Stroudsburg for the fourth and final playoff spot in the PSAC East.
Shippensburg will travel Wednesday to Bloomsburg for a 6 p.m. tipoff against the Huskies.
