SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team was unable to overcome a poor shooting effort in its final regular season game on Saturday afternoon, as it dropped a 66-61 decision to Kutztown on Senior Day from Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (14-12, 11-11 PSAC) honored its three seniors –
Monae Baker,
Lindsay Howard and
Erin Varley in its pregame Senior Day ceremony before the game.
Sophomore
Sarah Strybuc led a group of four Raiders in double figures, draining three three-pointers en route to 15 points. Baker recorded her 11th double-double of the season, going 10-of-10 from the free-throw line to finish with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Junior
Shawna Wert scored 13 points to go along with a game-high five assists and three rebounds. Junior
Dana Wert added 10 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Howard earned her third start of the season and contributed two points, two rebounds and her team-leading 16th block of the season. Varley recorded a rebound and an assist in her fourth start of the season.
Shippensburg used an 8-for-8 performance from the free throw line to take control in the first half, as the Raiders entered intermission leading 26-22 despite shooting just 30 percent from the field – including 18 percent from three-point range – in the first 20 minutes.
Shippensburg was unable to shoot any better in the second half, but the Raiders built a 38-31 lead six minutes in. The Golden Bears (8-20, 5-16 PSAC) answered by scoring eight straight to go up 39-38.
Shawna Wert made three-pointers on SU's next two possessions, however, to put the Raiders back up 44-41 at the 11:33 mark.
A subsequent 10-3 KU run put the Raiders into a 51-47 hole with 8:14 left. Kutztown made timely buckets down the stretch to hold off any Raiders runs, as SU failed to get any closer than two points in the final eight minutes of regulation.
Shippensburg shot just 29 percent from the field for the game for its second-worst shooting percentage of the season. Kutztown, meanwhile, shot 60 percent from the field in the second half to pull away.
The No. 4-seed Raiders will travel Tuesday to Bloomsburg to face off against the No. 1-seed Huskies in the first round of the PSAC playoffs. The tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
