Women’s Basketball Closes First Half Strong and Posts Convincing Win Over BYU-Hawaii, 82-57

SU opens Oahu Classic with impressive performance; Strybuc leads the Raiders with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting

The Shippensburg University women's basketball team used a 14-2 run over the final six minutes of the first half on Thanksgiving Day to build an 18-point halftime lead and overrun the Seasiders of BYU-Hawaii, 82-57, at the 2012 Oahu Classic held inside McKinley High School in Oahu, Hawaii.

Shippensburg (3-1) held a 31-25 lead with 6:01 remaining before the intermission and closed the half strong. SU led by as many as 35 points with 5:11 to play and shot 47.8 percent from three-point range (11-of-23) in the contest.

Junior Sarah Strybuc had her strongest shooting performance of the young season, making 6-of-10 three-point attempts to finish with 18 points. She also had three assists and two rebounds.

Senior point guard Dana Wert was excellent – contributing 14 points and eight assists. Fellow senior Raediah Lyles scored a season-high nine points on 4-of-6 shooting and grabbed three rebounds.

Off the bench, sophomore Jen Kalinowski and freshman Mariah Traywick each provided eight points — Traywick also led the Raiders with eight rebounds. Freshman Stephanie Knauer earned another start and had seven points and seven rebounds.

Eleven different Raiders had at least two points in the contest, including six each for senior Shawna Wert and junior Lauren Barnett.

Shippensburg will face Hawaii-Hilo at 9 p.m. EST tomorrow in its second and final game at the 2012 Oahu Classic.
