Shawna Wert went over 1,000 career points on Friday night and led four players in double figures but it wasn't enough as the Shippensburg University women's basketball team dropped a 65-60 decision to Davis & Elkins in its first game of the Wolf's Bus Lines Classic from Heiges Field House.
Shawna Wert went 8-of-9 from the free throw line as her two freebies with 11:07 left in the first half allowed her to hit the milestone. She finished the day with 12 points while senior
Dana Wert (6-of-7 from the stripe) and senior
Caitlin Bamberger (3-of-4 from the field) each scored 11.
Freshman
Stephanie Knauer put in 10 points along with four rebounds while freshman
Mariah Traywick recorded a game-high seven rebounds. In her first game of the season, junior
Sarah Strybuc scored eight points and contributed four assists.
The Raiders (1-1) led by as many as 18 points just over 12 minutes into the first half before the Senators (1-0) used a 9-0 run to cut the deficit in half. Shippensburg went into intermission up 10 before Davis & Elkins slowly chipped away and tied it up 46-46 with 9:37 left. The game remained close before the Senators pulled away late with four points in the final minute.
Shippensburg will face off against West Liberty tomorrow at 6 p.m. The Hilltoppers were 80-74 winners over Saint Augustine's on Friday in the Wolf's opener.
